In terms of my photography, I think shooting in the evening golden hour is "safer" because of both the foreseeable and unforeseeable problems. Generally, more people choose to do photography near the sunset hour due to the hassle to wake up early. Usually, do expect more crowds, especially at popular or tourist spots. The professional hair and makeup artist (HMUA) involved in the photoshoot has to wake up even earlier to prepare and travel over to the location for the makeup, which may cause damages to health. On the other hand, doing a morning golden hour photoshoot means the entire team has to wake up early in the wee hours to get prepared. Hence, morning is an easier choice for outdoor photoshoot to avoid photobombs. There are usually fewer people around because it's generally difficult for most people to wake up early. Sunrise golden hour is also known as morning golden hour. Sunrise Golden Hour VS Sunset Golden Hour Whereas for an evening golden hour photoshoot, I would schedule the time at 4.30pm for a two-hour photoshoot or 5.30pm for an one-hour photoshoot. Therefore, for a normal (not catching the sun in the background) morning golden hour photoshoot, I would start the photoshoot at around 7am or 7.30am where there will be available soft natural light. In Singapore, the timing to catch the sunrise is near 7am and for sunset is near 7pm. Golden hour time is around sunrise and sunset, and the exact timing varies slightly on each day and differ more between different countries. From then on, I recognise to the essential to do portrait photography in the better timing, especially the golden hours. We did the photoshoot under the direct sun and the photographs turned out bad. When I was new to photography, a freelance model approached me for a test shot and she gave me a horrible timing near noontime. In the case of doing a full-day pre-wedding photography, it's almost inevitable to shoot outside the golden hours. Unfortunately, not everyone would care because they think professional photographers can do wonder to create great portrait work regardless of the circumstances. Throughout my portrait photography journey, I've been advising friends and clients to do the photoshoot during the golden hours. If the location and background are sheltered from the direct sunlight, shooting at non golden hours is more forgivable. Since the sunlight is harsher, the shadows on the face will be sharper and won't be pleasing to the eyes. Therefore, the eyes and eyebags will be darker, the nose will appear brightest, and the complexion will look worse. During noon time, the direct sunlight comes from the top. To visualize the difference, just take an outdoor selfie both during noon time and around sunset (facing the sun). In such situation, golden hours may not work as well. Of course, if the concept of the photoshoot is to create a furious, mysterious or edgy look, harsher light may work better. The sunlight is at its softest and its angle is more flattering on faces, or in some cases, more dramatic (for landscape). Generally, it's most flattering to do photoshoots during the golden hours, including both portrait and landscape photoshoots. The best time for outdoor photography is at the golden hours, which is also known as the magic hour.
